NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF SPORTS SEEKS INCREASED FUNDING

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Director-General of the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Mr. Philip Shuaibu, has called for increased funding to reposition the institute and strengthen sports development in Nigeria. He made the appeal during a budget defence session with the House Committee on Sports, stressing that inadequate funding continues to hinder the growth of the sports sector.

Mr. Shuaibu reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to training manpower and promoting grassroots sports development, while also urging the speedy constitution of the National Sports Commission board to provide stability and strategic direction. He commended President Bola Tinubu and the House Committee on Sports for their support.

In response, the Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Mr. Kabiru Amadu, acknowledged the funding challenges facing the institute and pledged the committee’s commitment to improved budgetary support to enable the NIS perform its role effectively.
