The Zamfara State Police Command says its operatives have killed 17 suspected bandits following a deadly attack on motorists along the Gusau-Funtua Federal Highway.
The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said the attackers blocked the highway near Unguwar Chida Village in Tsafe Local Government Area and opened fire on two commercial vehicles.
He said eight people, including the driver of a Sharon vehicle and seven passengers, were killed, while nine others sustained gunshot injuries. Eight passengers were also abducted during the attack.
According to the police, security operatives later tracked the attackers as they fled towards the Funtua-Gusau axis and engaged them in a gun battle after they attempted to attack a food truck.
Abubakar said 17 bandits were killed in the encounter, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds.
The Command said joint security patrols have been intensified along the highway, while efforts are ongoing to rescue the abducted passengers and restore security in the area.
