The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council has condemned the arrest of five men linked to the “Tinubu Must Go” movement in Maiduguri, Borno State, describing the action as an abuse of power.
In a statement by its Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, the council alleged that the arrests were aimed at intimidating opposition supporters and restricting citizens’ right to express their political views ahead of the 2027 elections.
The ADC called on Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, to ensure the safety of those arrested and urged authorities to protect citizens’ fundamental rights.
However, the Borno State Police Command said the suspects were not arrested simply for wearing the shirts. The command said they were apprehended over allegations including public disturbance, thuggery and possession of suspected illicit drugs, adding that the case had been taken to court.
The police said the suspects were found with suspected Indian hemp, tablets, a shisha pot, scissors and two T-shirts bearing the inscription “Tinubu Must Go.”
The ADC, meanwhile, maintained that citizens have the right to express their political preferences and called for the protection of democratic freedoms ahead of the 2027 general election.
