Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has rewarded a retired school principal, Hajiya Falmata Mustapha, with a vehicle and ₦2 million in recognition of her 38 years of service to the education sector.

The Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Lawan Abba Wakilbe, presented the gifts on the governor’s behalf at the ministry’s Work Hub in Maiduguri.

Mustapha was recognised for her years of service as a teacher and principal of Yerwa Government Girls’ Secondary School, Maiduguri, as well as her work at the Aliko Dangote Model Orphanage.

She was particularly commended for her humanitarian efforts during the September 2024 flood disaster, when she ensured that children at the orphanage continued to receive food despite disruptions to supply routes.

Representatives of the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the Association of Nigerian Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools praised the state government for recognising dedication and professionalism. They also urged the government to address teachers’ welfare concerns.

In her response, Mustapha thanked Governor Zulum and the education commissioner for the recognition, expressing appreciation for the government’s efforts to improve teachers’ welfare and working conditions.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation has reviewed progress in the state’s education sector in 2026 and discussed funding priorities for 2027.

The quarterly meeting, chaired by Wakilbe, brought together education agencies and development partners, including UNICEF, to assess ongoing interventions and identify ways to improve education delivery across Borno State.

A presentation by UNICEF Education Sector Specialist, Dr Yusuf Ismail, highlighted progress recorded during the year and informed discussions on future priorities.
