Ten inmates at the custodial centre in Nasarawa local government area of Nasarawa State today regained their freedom.
They benefitted from a routine visit by the state chief judge, Justice Aisha Aliyu to the custodial centre
Justice Aisha Aliyu who cross examined the inmates discharged three out of the ten on health grounds.
Speaking on the rejection of minor offenders in adult custodial facilities by the Nigerian Correctional service, Nasarawa State command, the state chief judge disclosed that Governor Abdullahi Sule has approved the establishment of a custodial centre for suspected minor offenders in the state.
Justice Aisha Aliyu urged the freed inmates to shun acts capable of bringing them back to the correction center.
The state controller of corrections, Yunusa Ibrahim while addressing the inmates told the state chief judge that medium custodial centres across the state were overstretched due to increasing numbers of inmates.
He appealed to the State chief judge to intervene especially on inmates who have spent over six years without trial so as to decongest some of the custodial facilities in the state.
Nasarawa custodial centre has the capacity to accommodate 160 inmates but as at the time of the visit there were 142 inmates with 70 awaiting trials.
