NIGERIA AND UNITED NATIONS SIGN MOU ON COUNTERTERRORISM 31- 08- 2023
By: Sadiq Aminu The Nigerian Government and the United Nations has signed a Memorandum of Understanding MOU, on counter-terrorism.
The MOU it is in furtherance of the Federal Government effort with the International Community to combat terrorism.
A statement by the Head, Strategic Communications, office of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Zakari Usman said the office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, and United Nations office of Counter-Terrirorism, UNOCT, signed the MOU to further strengthen Counter-Terrorism efforts in the country.
According to the statement both parties on the occasion in Abuja said that the documents were in furtherance of the joint efforts to combat the global menace of terrorism, which remained one of the most complex challenges to the peace, security and stability of nations around the world.
The Nigerian government and the United Nations both equally pledged continued and effective collaboration to identify, collect, and disseminate good practices and lessons learned, and explore new opportunities by promoting dialogue and partnership through the development of capacity-building activities.
The National Coordination, National Counter-Terrorism Centre NCTC, Retired Rear Admiral Yeminu Musa, who represented the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, noted that the two Memorandums of Understanding signaled a momentous millstone in cementing the country’s partnership with UNOCT, towards enhanced collective counter-terrorism efforts.
The United Nations Under-Secretary-General, office of Counter-Terrorism, Mr. Vadimir Voronkov, said the MOU envisaged further cooperation in various areas, including countering terrorists travel, financing of terrorism, border and maritime security, as well as delivery of counter-terrorism training in Nigeria.
