WE MUST PROTECT OUR DATA BANK TO CONQUER SECURITY CHALLENGES AND DATA BREACHES: BOSUN TIJANI 1/9/2023
By: Sadiq Aminu The Federal Government says it is streamlining the periodic data gathered by data collecting bodies to tackle security challenges and data breaches.
The Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Tijani Bosun stated this while addressing a Sensitization Workshop on Data Privacy/Protection in Nigeria organized by the National Data Protection Commission, NDPC and a world bank funded programme tagged, Digital Identification for Development, ID4D.
Dr Tijani said data which is critical to national, private and public security in all forms must be protected from breaches therefore access, utilisation and operational use must be guided by relevant laws.
The Communications Minister said the President Bola Tinubu administration was also working to use data to create employment and wealth.
The National Commissioner of the National Data Protection Commission, NDPB, Dr Vincent Olatunji said the commission was working assiduously to guide against breaches by all data collecting and processing bodies and called for the cooperation of every Nigeria.
Reacting to a recent issue concerning the submission of certain sensitive data by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Dr Olatunji said the Commission had engaged the Apex Bank in order to work in harmony with it based on the provisions of the National Data Protection Laws of the country.
Agencies represented at the Workshop such as the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, the Nigerian Communication Satellite, NIGCOMSAT, Galaxy Backbone all pledged readiness to synergize and safeguard the nations’ and citizens’ data from breaches and other forms of illegal use.
