WHEAT FARMERS TO COMMENCE MASS CULTIVATION ACROSS NORTHERN NIGERIA                                                                                                                17-09-23

By Sadiq Aminu                                                 The President National Association of Wheat Farmers, Processors and Marketers of Nigeria, Wing Commander Shuiabu Hamza (rtd) says the country would soon become wheat sufficient.

Wing Commander Hamza made the promise in an interview with newsmen shortly after visiting Lake Chad Research Institute and Shehu of Borno who is also the grand patron of the Association in Maiduguri.

The National President announced that all the nineteen states in northern Nigeria are viable for wheat cultivation with the unveiling of new varieties of wheat by the Lake Chad Research Institute.

He said farmers across the region will soon commence all year round wheat cultivation which will make the country a wheat producing nation.

“the highlands of Mambila and Gembu, the highlands of Obudu are for wheat cultivation with this new variety. So wheat will be all over Nigeria in addition to the nineteen northern states earlier mentioned” Hamza assured.

Wing Commander Shuaibu Hamza pointed out that Lake Chad Research Institute presented them with seventeen different high yield varieties of wheat and promised to train farmers on how to cultivate the new variety.

According to him, the Association will engage at least fifty thousand youths from each state across the country to start wheat farming.

The President also announced that the Association will launch its 2023 dry season farming in Borno state considering the strategic position of the state in wheat farming.
