BUILDING COLLAPSE: GOVERNMENT URGED TO PRIORITIZE PROFESSIONALS IN PROJECTS EXECUTION                                                                                        20-09-23

By Sadiq Aminu                                                          Government at all levels have been advised to engage in pre construction, engineering geological investigation in the execution of development projects in Nigeria.

The President Nigeria Mining and Geo Science Society Professor Akinade Shedrack Olatunji gave the advise while declaring opened the eighth Nigerian Association For Engineering Geology and the Environment NAEGE International Conference and exhibition held  in Minna Niger state.

Prof Shedrack Olatunji however, maintained that unless we follow the global best practices in our building procedures by employing professionals as against the current practice of employing quacks to do the job we will continue to have building road and dams collapse in Nigeria.

According to him several factors are responsible for building collapse which must be investigated as such that if they are geological factors it can only be addressed by geologists and if they are engineering factors it will solved by an engineer since Nigeria is blessed with abundant professional human resources to do the job.

In his remarks the National President Nigerian Association For Engineering Geology and the Environment NAEGE De Waliu Kayode Adeolu said that with the escalating rise in environmental hazards it is their duty to identify innovative solutions that Safeguard lives and infrastructure for maximum benefits.

Dr Waliu Kayode Adeolu however, explained that as Nigeria’s potential for mineral resources becomes increasingly evident they must balance their drive for economic growth with imperative to minimise ecological impact to ensure responsible extraction practices.

He said their involvement in shaping policies and regulations can foster an environment conducive for sustainable infrastructure development.

Various goodwill messages of hope and encouragements were presented by Niger state Commissioner for Mineral Resources and that of Environment and Climate Change Emir of Minna and the Vice Chancellor Federal University Minna among others.

Seven persons are to receive fellowship award of the Association after series of painstaken assesment.
