The Lagos State Government is to demolish two major markets on Lagos Island to address the perennial flooding in the area.
They are the Bombata and Jankara markets which were not just dirty, but flooded with rancid water when Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inspected the area on Sunday.
While briefing newsmen after the inspection tour, the Governor attributed the flooding in the area to the illegal construction of buildings and shanties on drainage channels.
Governor Sanwo-Olu called for attitudinal change of all residents and traders to complement government’s efforts at sanitizing the environment.
He said that the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources would begin issuance of notices to traders and squatters, especially at Pelewura Market as well as brainstorm with the Concessionaire and the Council authority to determine when the evacuation and demolition of the Markets would commence.
The inspection tour started from Idumagbo Avenue through Ojo-Giwa, Jankara, Oroyinyin, Bombata, Pelewura to Ilubinrin, where the State Government is building a Pumping station to take water from Thomas and Idumagbo into the Lagos Lagoon.
