ECONOMIC HARDSHIP: KANO MASS WEDDING RECEIVES COMMENDATION FROM NORTHERN RELIGIOUS LEADERS 16-10-23
By Sadiq Aminu Northern religious leaders from both Muslim and Christian communities in Northern Nigeria have expressed their appreciation to the Kano State Government’s recent initiative to sponsor mass weddings.
This move, they believe would help alleviate the challenges faced by unmarried couples during these trying times and reduced instances of premarital sex and other unacceptable relationships.
Prominent Islamic Scholar, Ibrahim Musa in Kaduna who lauded the effort of Gov. Abba Yusuf for covering the dowry of #50.000 for each groom called on the 19 Northern governors to replicate the initiative to combat the financial burden placed on couples due to the high cost of traditional weddings.
Musa highlighted the comprehensive support provided to the newly wedded couples in Kano to include essential items like food, and clothing, including a set of beds, along with mattresses, pillows, and N20,000 financial boost to start a business.
It is anticipated that this government intervention will significantly ease the path to marriage for countless young couples.
Pastor Dr. Yohanna Buru, the General Overseer of Christ Evangelical and Life Intervention Ministry in Kaduna, lauded the effort of his fellow religious leader, pointing out that, many Muslim and Christian couples in the North yearn to wed but face financial barriers, leading to extended periods of courtship.
Pastor Buru believes that, similar initiatives across the Northern states can address and prevent moral and social challenges arising from delayed marriages.
He said, this laudable initiative can also have a broader societal impact, as it would reduce societal vices associated with postponed marriages and improve the economic well-being of families.
The Northern Nigerian religious leaders also urged well-meaning individuals to support young couples seeking marriage by providing vocational training to equip them for a more stable future with their partners and families.
