FEC ASKS MINISTRY OF HUMANITARIAN AFFAIRS TO INSTITUTE A TRUST FUND TO CATER FOR VICTIMS OF DISASTERS          23-10-23

By Sadiq Aminu                                                      The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs has obtained approval from the Federal Executive Council, FEC, to institute a trust fund to adequately cater for victims of disasters.

Briefing State House correspondents on the approval, the Minister, Dr. Betta Edu, said the Ministry was aiming to garner 5 billion dollars annually from various sources for that purpose.

She explained that the trust fund would be overseen by a governing board, adding that distribution of relief materials from the fund would be worked out by committee members from the Minister for Finance and other relevant Ministers.

“This is a flexible form of financing that is supposed to help Nigeria adequately respond to humanitarian crises and challenges as well as adequately address the issue of poverty in Nigeria. This of course is a victory for the poor and indeed, would bring help and succor which the renewed hope agenda stands for”, she said.

She said Council also ratified the Protocol on the Protection of the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria.

“We have signed up to the African charter and this has made us one of the countries within Africa that has approved that older people be protected and should not be discriminated against at any level”, the Minister explained.

FEC equally approved a draft policy for the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to sanitise activities in the sector.

The policy, according to the Minister, Mr. Delete Alake, would cover the gamut of oil activities, operations, guidelines, regulatory framework, handling, sourcing, mining, and all the dynamics in the sector.
