PARLIAMENTARY STAFF STRIKE IN SOKOTO                                                                                                               29-10-23

By Sadiq Aminu                                                     Members of the Sokoto State Chapter of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria PASAN has joined their counterparts on an indefinite nationwide strike.

Chairman of the association Mr Abubakar Yusuf, told newsmen in Sokoto that the move was an extension of their ongoing struggle that began since 2020.

It may be recalled that the association took similar action in 2020 which was later called off Following an interventions from various sectors in the country.

Africa 247 report that members of the association shut down the State House of Assembly complex.                            However, former President Muhammadu Buhari signed an executive order to secure the financial autonomy of the legislature and the judiciary which up to now didn’t see the light of the day.

After resolving the legal complexities, the order was reaffirmed and the former president initiated a committee for its full implementation.

According to him, the progress was stalled following the transition of the previous government.

Yusuf added that the association had patiently awaited for government to fullfil its promises which have not been fullfil up to now.

He explained that the association resolved to lock all State Assemblies, including the National Assembly indefinitely until their demands were met.

He added that the struggle was not solely for the benefit of the parliamentary staff, stressing that it is driven by a national interest with a view to ensuring the government’s success in the fight against corruption was achieved.
