AVIATION UNIONS CALL FOR EMPLOYER GOVERNMENT COLLABORATION TO TACKLE INDUSTRIAL CRISIS AND STRIKES                                                                                                                 17-11-23

By Sadiq Aminu                                                    Unions in the aviation industry say, the solution to industrial crisis and strikes lie with employers and the government.

Speaking at the 11th National Union of Air Transport Employees, NUATE, Quadrenniel National Delegates Conference in Benin City, President of the union, Comrade Ben Nnabue listed what employers and government should do to ensure industrial harmony.

These he listed to include, building trust through timely honoring of agreements, demonstrating sincerity of purpose and action.

“A simple resort to the positive practices mentioned here will do far more for harmony than a thousand sermons and beatitudes aimed at the troubled hearts of unionists. Rather than appealing to the union, let us do equity. Rather than appeal for law and order, let us do justice”.

President, National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, NAAPE, Comrade Abednego Galadinma, highlighted the importance of avoiding strong-arm tactics, deceptions, and unfair practices by employers and the government, as these would only fuel resistance from unions, leading to avoidable crises.

Speaking on the theme of the delegates conference: ‘A New Partnership in Aviation Development’, the former Managing Director, Nigeria Airspace Management Agency NAMA, Mr. Nnamdi Udoh said partnerships play a crucial role for individuals, organizations, and businesses seeking to navigate challenging environments.

He emphasized that, the fundamental goal is to overcome obstacles collectively, with agreements stipulating a shared responsibility for both success and failure.

“A good partnership must therefore help two parties bridge the gaps that exist in their solo operations. We must find who offers a different perspective than what you currently have to be able to tackle problems in a new and dynamic way”.

Highlights of the conference was the presentation of awards to aviation organizations and individuals before the election of new executives to pilot the affairs of the union in the next four years.
