IWD: 3 000 WOMEN EMPOWERED WITH CASH, FOOD ITEMS IN BORNO STATE                                                                 09-03-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                     The First Lady of Borno state Dr Falmata Babagaba Zulum has launched the disbursement of 150 million naira cash support to three thousand vulnerable women on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Each beneficiary will receive 50,000 naira cash and food items to ameliorate the current economic hardship.

At a ceremony in Maiduguri, Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum said the support is part of the empowerment drive of the state government.

He gave an assurance that his administration will continue to assist women IDPs, widows and other vulnerable people who have been devastated by fifteen years of insurgency.

Professor Zulum called on women in the state to form cooperative groups so as to benefit from government grants and intervention.

“this administration will continue to support girl child education, support women doctors, nurses and women teachers. What we want to do is invest heavily to enable them stand on their own ” Zulum said.

The Governor emphasized that the next three years of his administration will focus more on girl child education.

First Lady of Borno state, Dr Falmata Babagana Zulum noted that the best way to improve women inclusion is through forming women economic clusters, involving women and girls in sustainable agriculture.

She explained that the three thousand women are selected across the twenty seven local government areas to benefit from the empowerment package.

“the theme for the 2024 International Women’s Day highlights the significance of empowerment across all sectors of the society ” Dr Falmata Zulum said.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo said the ministry has carried out several projects and activities geared towards improving the welfare and livelihood particularly to victims of Boko Haram insurgency and gender based violence.

Items presented to each beneficiary include 25 kilogram bag of rice, cartoon of Marcaroni and gallon of cooking oil in addition to the cash assistance.
