ECOWAS CONVENES SUB REGIONAL CONFERENCE ON YOUTH EMPOWERMENT                                                                          19-04-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                              The ECOWAS commissioner in charge of
Human Development and Social Affairs Professor Fatou Sow Sarr says the sub regional body has lined up series of activities aimed at enhancing youth productivity.

To this end, she disclosed that a youth conference would be organised next month to take stock of the current situation, identify the changes and ruptures which have led to the general malaise observed in the subregion.

She stated this in Abuja during the ECOWAS weekly press briefing.

Professor Fatou Sow explained that ECOWAS places high regard for youths empowerment and development in all sectors especially in digital and creative sectors.

She said consultations would be organized by the commission in member countries to bring together young people concerned in their geographic, social and socio-professional diversity.

The commissioner also disclosed that since 2019 ECOWAS has sent 42 young people for master’s degrees in diplomacy and international relations in Spain and provided support for young people through prizes to the most successful startups in scientific innovation with $50,000.

She said through the Research and Innovation Support Programme of ECOWAS from 2018 to 2024, thirty 30 young people were trained in Masters and PHD through funds donated to research consortia, for a total of $700,000.
