BUK-CGS & MERCY CORPS COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MULTILATERALISM AND DIPLOMACY FOR PEACE                                               25-04-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                              The Director of Centre for Gender Studies (CGS), Bayero University Kano (BUK) Ambassador Dr Safiya Nuhu, has described peacebuilding, peacekeeping and peace processes as important aspects of multilateralism and diplomacy.

Dr Safiya made the indication during an event to commemorate the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace 2024.

According to her, the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace has a global significance among youths, that has given birth to milestone achievements in peacekeeping and peace-building within the context of society.

The director explained that last year the centre launched a mentorship programme exclusively on mentoring women for peacebuilding, which was expanded in 2024 to bridge the gap and accommodate men from various walks of life.

“offering mentorship prospects to youth would pave the way for better development of the society”

Ambassador Safiya urged others to mentor youths to move the country forward.

In his presentation titled: Mentoring Youth for Inclusive Development, the special guest of honour who doubles as the former chief of staff to the president Professor Ibrahim Gambari said Nigeria as a multi-religious, multi-ethnic and multicultural society needs the required knowledge to apply diplomacy in all aspects.

Represented by Ambassador Abdullahi Omaki, he stressed that society must adopt diplomacy to live in peace as it is more beneficial than living in chaos, which leads to untold hardship and a lack of mutual understanding.

“To be able to find how we can arouse the consciousness of youths to diplomacy is enormous.”

Some of the participants who spoke to Africa 247, Professor Hassana Sani Darma, Ambassador Ahmed Mohammad Makarfi, Zainab Olufunmi and Abubakar Tijjani Rabi’u described the event as apt.

The event themed: Mentoring Young Leaders for Peacebuilding and Inclusive Development was organized by the CGS BUK in collaboration with Mercy Corps (USAID) and marked by paper presentations, and panel discussions among others.
