FG EXPLORING AVAILABLE OPTIONS TO CUSHION HIGH COST OF FOOD ITEMS-FCCPC 25-06-24
By Sadiq Aminu The Acting Executive Vice chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Dr. Adamu Abdullahi says the federal government is exploring available options to cushion the effect of high cost of food items.
Dr. Abdullahi stated during a fact finding survey to Galadima market and Dawanau grains market Kano.
According to him, the federal government is worried by the plight of the masses especially on prices of food items.
“Food is a very essential commodities because you have to eat first before anything else and once the people haven’t eat, government cannot sleep”
He stressed that part of the organization’s mandate is to visit markets across the six geopolitical zones to examine what is responsible for the hike in price of commodities.
“We have found out some of the challenges and have gotten a lot of takeaways and would advise government appropriately so as to ensure prices of goods come down”
The active executive vice chairman pointed out that part of the renewed hope agenda of president Tinubu is to make sure that Nigerians gets a better deal that will make them believe in government efforts of making life meaningful to Nigerians.
Dr Abdullahi explained that some of the issues raised by the trader’s associations in the markets visited include issues of insecurity, high cost of transportation, farmers’ interest in farming cash crops than food crops
“like hibiscus and beniseed, mopping of farm produce from farmers at a fair price, importation of food items to meet up the shortage of supply among others”
He however stressed that FCCPC would continue to ensure fair market practices and the removal of all impediments to a free market in the country.
Africa 247 correspondent reports that Abdullahi called on Nigerians to be patient with the present administration as the government is having sleepless nights over the high rises in the cost of food stuffs in the market.
