By Sadiq Aminu                                                                  The governing Councils of federal Tertiary institutions have been inaugurated.

At the event in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman highlighted the critical role of the governing Councils in the growth of the institutions.
He urged them to bring their wealth of experience to bear in the discharge of their duties and help the government tackle the numerous challenges in the institutions.
He enumerated the challenges to include low carrying capacity due to poor infrastructure, Japa syndrome, insufficient funding, unstable academic calendar, insufficient deployment of ICT, illegal institutions and gender imbalance.

“I thank you for accepting our invitation to join in the task of re- engineering our tertiary Institutions so as to enable them fulfil their commitment to quality teaching, learning, research and service to our communities, and our dear nation. I implore you all to reciprocate the trust and confidence which Government has reposed in you by deploying your knowledge, skills and wealth of experience in moving our tertiary Institutions to greater heights. he said.

The Minister advised the members of the governing Councils to acquaint themselves with the various policies and regulations to enable them to do their job efficiently and in tandem with the aspirations of the government.

“one of your responsibilities is to ensure good management, healthy growth and development of your Institutions. You should be abreast of the current Acts of your various Institutions, Government policies, White Papers (if any); Circulars, Gazettes and other relevant documents, relating to the Institutions and those of general application in MDAS”

Professor Mamman appealed to them to work closely with the school management and unions to ensure development and industrial harmony.
