NIGERIA POLICE FORCE PREVENTS SSANU AND NASU FROM EMBARKING ON NATIONWIDE PROTEST SLATED FOR TODAY                                                                      18-07-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                               The Nigeria Police Force has prevented the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) from embarking on nationwide protest slated for today.

The FCT commissioner of Police, Mr Beneth Igwe visited Unity Fountain in Abuja, where the unions gathered to inform them that the protest should not hold for security reasons.

The Unions later embarked on peaceful protest within the fountain and express their displeasure over the non payment of their withheld four months salaries by the federal government.

The unions carried different placards with inscriptions such as ” Enough of promises: Pay us our 4months withheld salaries; We need funding, pay us what you owe us among others.

The President of SSANU, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim said all efforts to engage the federal government does not yield positive result to address the payment of their salaries.

The leadership of the Unions resolved to proceed to the Federal Ministry of Education and Labour and Employment to submit their letters on the withheld salaries.

The protest followed a two weeks ultimatum issued to the federal government to meet their demands.
