MINISTER OF AVIATION REVEALS GOVERNMENT’S PLANS TO CONCESSION 5 INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS IN THE COUNTRY 07-09-24
By Sadiq Aminu The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has revealed the government’s plans to concession five international airports in the country, including the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
In an interview after an inspection tour of the Lagos airport, he emphasized that the concession plan is part of a larger strategy to transform the airport’s operations and provide a better experience for travelers.
Mr. Keyamo highlighted the various initiatives being implemented to improve the airport’s facilities and services.
These include the renovation of the E-Wing departure and arrival areas, as well as the introduction of new amenities such as lifts for passengers with disabilities and dedicated units for nursing mothers.
According to Mr. Keyamo, the government’s short-term goal is to provide a wonderful experience for travelers, while the long-term plan is to concession the airport to the best partners in the world.
“This is not our big plan for the airport. The big plan for the airport, especially the five international airports, is still to concession them to the best in the world”.
The Minister also addressed concerns about the previous concession process, which was halted due to complaints and litigations.
He assured that the new process will be more transparent and competitive, with the goal of attracting the best bidders to transform the airport’s operations.
“We are looking for the best partners in the world to come and collaborate with us in turning the airport around and running them professionally. And all will be to the benefit, ultimate benefit of Nigerians.
He added, I spoke to Mr. President about it. Mr. President said, Minister, go for the best. Nobody is interested in whoever is coming to do it. But under Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government, it is going to be as transparent as possible. The president gave us marching orders”.
The concession plan is expected to bring in new investment and expertise to the airport, leading to improved facilities and services for travelers.
The Minister did not provide a specific timeline for the concession process, but indicated that the government will go public with the plan soon.
