HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES REJECTS CONFERMENT OF CFR TITLE ON THE SPEAKER                                                                                                                                    02-10-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                 The House of Representatives has called for the conferment of the title of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on the Speaker House of Representatives Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, instead of the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR).
The House in a motion by the Deputy spokesman of the House, Mr. Philip Agbese, also called for the recognition of the speaker of the House as the Co-heads of the National Assembly, instead of the recognition of the President of the Senate as the Chairman of the National Assembly.

The green Chamber also queried the inappropriate referral of the House of Representatives as lower Chamber
“inappropriate culture of discrimination against the House of Representatives, often portrayed as inferior to the Senate, through language that consistently refers to the Senate as the “upper chamber” and the House of Representatives as a “lower chamber.” This terminology misrepresents the legal status of both chambers and diminishes the House’s standing”
The House also noted the ranking of the Chief Justice of Nigeria above the Speaker of the House of Representatives, during the National Honor, breached the ranking Protocols that identified the Speaker as the number fourth citizens of Nigeria.

“Notes that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, who is lower in protocol ranking than the Speaker of the House of Representatives, was also awarded the title of GCON, further exemplifying this culture of discrimination against the leadership of the House”
Adopting the motion, the House referred the motion to the relevant committees for further legislative actions.
