By Sadiq Aminu                                                                  The Northeast Development Commission, NEDC, is to begin the production of e-vehicles for intra and inter States mass transportation.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Alhaji Muhammad Alkali, made this known in Abuja, shortly after obtaining President Tinubu’s approval to deploy the vehicles.

He explained that the Commission would, in the next 2 years, produce over ten thousand e-vehicles, comprising forty-passenger capacity, fully air-conditioned buses, taxis, and eight-passenger capacity tricycles.

Alhaji Alkali said they had also obtained presidential approval to build 5 and 10 kva modular solar power units in each of the six States within its jurisdiction as alternative sources of recharging the vehicles.

He said State Governors within the sub-region had agreed to provide suitable places for the building of the modular solar units, arguing that CNG vehicles will not be suitable for the sub-region due to the non-availability of the commodity.

Alhaji Alkali further explained that a single recharge of the proposed e-vehicles could cover two hundred and fifty kilometres, saying that modifications would be done to stretch the coverage.
