NASARAWA COMMUNITIES RECEIVE LIFELINE THROUGH N-HYPPADEC FLOOD INTERVENTION PROJECTS 14-10-24
By Sadiq Aminu Thirty flood-prone communities across seven Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Nasarawa State are set to benefit from intervention projects aimed at alleviating the devastating effects of recurrent flooding.
This was disclosed by the Managing Director of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, during the opening of a two-day training programme for enumerators in Lafia, the state capital.
Alhaji Yelwa explained that the projects, which follow the 2022 amendment of the law establishing N-HYPPADEC, now include Nasarawa State among other states benefiting from the Commission’s interventions.
These projects aim to provide relief and prevent future damage in flood-ravaged communities.
During his speech, delivered by the Head of Press and Media, Mallam Nura Wakili, Alhaji Yelwa noted, “The communities identified have been severely affected by flooding due to the overflow of the River Benue and the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon. The enumerators will carry out needs assessments and map out these areas for intervention.”
“This intervention is crucial,” he added, “as these communities have endured flooding for many years with significant loss of lives and property.”
Also speaking at the event, the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Yakubu Kwanta, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mallam Garba Rosha, emphasized the importance of the intervention. “The flooding situation has worsened year after year, resulting in enormous damage to lives and property. This initiative will help alleviate the suffering of the affected communities.”
A Traditional Ruler in the state the Koron Kuje, Mr. Sunday Namo, one of the traditional rulers, expressed gratitude for the project, assuring N-HYPPADEC of the community’s full cooperation. “We are thankful for this intervention. Our people have been well-sensitized to ensure a smooth and hitch-free mapping and enumeration process.”
The seven LGAs that will benefit from the intervention are Awe, Doma, Nasarawa, Keffi, Kokona, Karu, and Toto.
