NELFUND DISBURSES OVER N10 BILLION AS TUITION FEES AND STIPENDS- NELFUND MD                                                                       23-10-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                                    The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Akintunde Sawyerr, says the scheme has disbursed over N10 billion from the over 350,000 applications received, with the commitment to disbursing N90 billion in tuition fees and stipends.
Mr. Sawyerr who stated this during a maiden meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Student Loans, Scholarships and Higher Education Financing at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, stressed that the Fund was not discriminatory in discharging its mandates
Mr. Sawyerr explained that the Scheme has been inclusive, ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of location or background, has access to the education they deserve.
He said they have also been proactive in reaching out to segments of the nation that feel left behind- particularly the South East.
The NELFUND MD said they have made significant progress in engaging these communities, with multiple rounds of sensitization in the region, resulting in a surge in applications.
He said the Fund is making special provisions for students living with disabilities with special focus in addressing the barriers to girl-child education.
The Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Gboyega Isiaka, said NELFUND was a very critical agency created not only to provide loans, but also about creating a future where every Nigerian youth has the opportunity to realise their potentials and contribute to the nation’s growth.
Mr. Isiaka emphasized that the Committee was concerned about the ability of the management to manage the enterprise, which has so much potential.
He said the Committee was committed to ensuring accountability and transparency of the Fund.
