By Sadiq Aminu                                                                    As part of its efforts to develop a skilled and innovative workforce, the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, has launched a groundbreaking initiative to equip Nigerian youths with specialized skills in rock tiling and interlocking design.

This initiative was unveiled during the opening ceremony of the 2nd edition of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Camp held in Jalingo, Taraba State.

The program underscores the government’s dedication to fostering creativity and innovation in modern construction and design.

Speaking at the event, Dr Muyibat Adenike Olodo, Director of Technology and Science Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, described the training as a vital step toward building a skilled and innovative workforce.

“This program aligns with the Federal Ministry of Education’s transformative agenda under Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Initiative, which prioritizes youth empowerment, poverty eradication, and resilience through practical education and skills acquisition,” she stated.

The training focuses on equipping Nigerian youths with advanced skills to meet the demands of an evolving job market.

Participants will gain practical experience in rock tiling techniques and interlocking surface creation, essential elements in contemporary construction and urban design.

Building on the success of last year’s TVET Camp, themed “Painting into the Future,” this year’s edition expands its scope. Last year’s participants demonstrated their talents by transforming their schools with remarkable painting and decoration projects, earning recognition from the Federal Ministry of Education and the African Development Bank.

Dr. Muyibat emphasized that the training aims to foster creativity, enhance craftsmanship, and improve job readiness among participants.

She noted that by integrating these skills into the curriculum, the Federal Government is empowering youths while contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth and infrastructure development.

Speaking at the event, Alhaji Idris Goje, Permanent Secretary of the Taraba State Ministry of Education, who represented the Commissioner of the Ministry, Dr Augustina Godwin, highlighted the importance of equipping students with skills and knowledge to excel in today’s competitive job market.

She noted that the TVET Camp provides participants with opportunities for workshops, training sessions, and mentorship programs while fostering interactions with industry professionals.

Dr Augustina Godwin revealed that the state government had implemented various initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education, increasing access to education, and promoting technical and vocational education, noting that the free education policy in the state is laudable and the success is evident.

Dr. Bibinu Samuel Ahmed, Principal of the Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC) Jalingo, praised the program’s transformative impact and acknowledged the unwavering support of Governor Agbu Kefas for the college.

“This year’s venue, FSTC Jalingo, showcases the tangible results of the TVET initiative, from newly painted school fences to ongoing project preparations,” he said.

Mrs Zenum Peters, Taraba State Coordinator of NABTEB, described the training as life-changing, adding that “The TVET Camp is not just a program; it’s a launchpad for a brighter future, turning potential into tangible success stories.”

Additionally, Mr Jacob Samuel Adekunle, Representative of the African Development Bank and Coordinator of the Inclusive Basic Service Delivery Livelihood Empowerment Integrated Project, emphasized that the training goes beyond theoretical learning.

“This program provides participants with hands-on experience in specialized fields like rock tiling and interlocking designs. It equips them with the tools needed to thrive in a modern job market that demands adaptability, creativity, and technical proficiency,” he explained.

The TVET Camp serves as a platform for mentorship, networking, and collaboration, offering participants valuable insights from industry experts and empowering them to make informed career decisions.

The Three-week-long training brought together selected students from Technical Colleges and Federal Science and Technical Colleges in the north-eastern region comprising Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, and the host Taraba, while Yobe State was not represented.

Furthermore, the District Head of Kachalla Sambe, which is the host community of the college, Prince Kachalla Ishaku, in an interview, praised the Federal and State governments for prioritising education and appreciated the Principal of the college, Dr Bibinu Samuel, for carrying stakeholders along.

Prince Ishaku also described Governor Agbu Kefa’s free education policy as impactful and commendable, pointing out that the TVET initiative will go a long way in reducing unemployment among the younger generations.

With its theme “Tiling and Interlocking Innovative Surfaces,” the 2nd edition of the TVET Camp reinforces the Federal Ministry of Education’s commitment to nurturing a generation of skilled professionals poised to transform Nigeria into a hub of innovation and excellence.
