OBASA RETURNS AS SPEAKER OF THE LAGOS STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY                                                                 03-03-25

By Sadiq Aminu.                                                       The embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State Assembly, Mr Mudashiru Obasa has returned as the new Speaker of the House.

He was removed on the thirteenth of last January by thirty-six of the forty State Assembly members

The development followed an intervention by leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who led a delegation to resolve the crisis.

Before Mr Obasa’s return as Speaker, the first female Speaker of the Assembly, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, resigned.

Resigned along with the Speaker were some of the principal officers namely, the Deputy Speaker, Fatai Mojeed, the Chief Whip, David Setonji, and Deputy Chief Whip, Ganiu Okanlawon.

Mrs Meranda’s resignation followed a deal brokered by party leaders to end the leadership crisis in the first State Assembly.

Mrs Meranda, who was given a standing ovation, said her decision to resign was in the best interest of the party and her desire to see the end to the crisis that has almost torn the House and the State apart.

Mrs Meranda was elected as Speaker on the thirteenth of January, following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa

She held the office for forty-nine days.

In several emotional speeches preceding her resignation, lawmakers eulogized Mrs Meranda as a compassionate, humble and dedicated and time-conscious leader.

Mrs Meranda was later reelected as the Deputy Speaker of the tenth Assembly, while Mr Mojeed was reelected as the Chief Whip of the House, and Mr Adewale remained in his position as Majority Leader.

Mr David Setonji representing Badagry State Constituency Two was reelected as the Deputy Chief Whip, while Mr Richard Kasumu retains his position as Deputy Majority Leader.

It is believed that the crisis at the State Assembly has come to an end.

The House then adjourned sitting indefinitely.
