In a move reflecting his commitment to justice reform and inmate rehabilitation, Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has secured the release of eight female inmates from Goron-Dutse Correctional Center. The Governor settled their fines and compensation fees, enabling their freedom.
Among those released were two pregnant women and two nursing mothers.
The gesture followed an unannounced visit by the Governor to the facility, accompanied by senior government officials. According to a statement from his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the visit was part of a broader initiative to evaluate prison conditions and identify ways the government could improve inmate welfare and rehabilitation.
During his visit, Governor Yusuf voiced concern over the high number of inmates awaiting trial. Of the 1,939 individuals in custody, only 382 had been convicted, while 1,536 remained in pre-trial detention. He emphasized his administration’s plan to collaborate with the judiciary to expedite legal processes and decongest correctional centers.
Addressing the inmates, the Governor urged them to stay hopeful and use their time in custody as an opportunity for personal growth. He assured them of the government’s support in helping them reintegrate into society.
To improve living conditions, he immediately ordered the provision of cows, food supplies, mattresses, blankets, and assorted beverages for inmates.
In a related visit to Janguza Maximum Security Correctional Facility, Governor Yusuf revealed plans to transfer inmates from Kurmawa Correctional Centre to the more spacious Janguza facility. He praised the infrastructure and general conditions there and encouraged inmates to reflect on their experiences and prepare for a better future.
Governor Yusuf also recognized the contributions of former Interior Minister, General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (Rtd.), for his role in the establishment and development of the Janguza center.
Reiterating his administration’s priorities, the Governor pledged continued efforts to support inmate rehabilitation, facilitate education for young offenders, and promote vocational training as a path to empowerment and reintegration.
