NBTE INAUGURATES COUNCIL ON CREATIVE MEDIA TO DRIVE CHANGE IN THE SECTOR 27-05-25
By Sadiq Aminu The National Board for Technical Education, NBTE has inaugurated the Sector Skills Council on Creative Media to address the skills gap in the creative industry.
The Council is saddled with the responsibility of Identifying and articulating the sector’s skills needs, developing more responsive provision to meet industry demands, influence as well as engage employers in skills development.
At the event in Abuja, the Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, Professor Idris Bugaje which is the 20th sector skills council established under Nigeria’s Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), was part of efforts by the government to standardise skills training and certification as well as ensure ensuring that young Nigerians are equipped with industry-relevant competencies.
Professor Bugaje expressed confidence in the expertise of members of the creative media sector skills council to boost to carry out the assignment.
“The creative media industry is a dynamic and promising sector that holds tremendous potential for Nigeria’s economic growth”
“We look forward to very productive programmes, activities and enhancement of formalizing the informal.”
He also informed the Council that the National Skills and Qualifications Framework has been integrated into the scheme of Service of the Federal Government and their recommendations would guide policy formulation in the sector.
The Chairman of the Council, Hajiya Fatima Abubakar, stressed the need to recognise and institutionalize experiential skills developed outside formal education systems.
Hajia Fatima called for the collaboration of all stakeholders to carry out the task ahead.
“This is not a task that can be accomplished by one person alone. The strength of this sector lies in the collective wisdom, dedication and active participation of each and everyone.”
A member of the Council and Nollywood actor, Mr. Francis Duru, said the world was skills-driven and that Nigeria must shift from credentialism to competency.
He called for mentorship programmes, masterclasses, and stronger industry-academia collaborations to ensure on-the-job knowledge-Transfer.
The twenty-member Creative Media Skills Council has ninety percent of its members drawn from the private sector.
