ANSHA PASSES A BILL TO PROVIDE AGAINST ALL FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION AND TO GIVE PROTECTION TO PLW HIV AIDS                                                                         20-06-25

By Sadiq Aminu.                                                        The Anambra state House of Assembly has passed a bill for a law to provide against all forms of discrimination and to give protection to persons living with HIV Aids.

The bill also seeks to provide access to support and care for all persons living with HIV and affected by AIDS in Anambra state.

The bill was passed after a thorough discussion and considerations by the House Committee on Health led by the Chairman, Mr Tony Moubike.

During plenary presided over by the Speaker Mr Somtochukwu Udeze, the House resolved to the Committee on the whole where the lawmakers took their turns to make corrections and recommendations before reverting back to plenary.

The Sponsor of the bill, Mr Noble Igwe representing Ogbaru Constituency 1, said the purpose of the law was to protect the rights and dignity of people living and affected by HIV and AIDS in the state.

According to him, the law aims to eliminate all forms of discrimination based on HIV status and also create a supportive environment that they continue working under the normal conditions for as long as they are medically fit to do so.

Mr Igwe explained that the law would also create a balance between the rights and responsibilities of all the persons in the society and giving effect to human rights guaranteed in Chapter 4 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

The Speaker, Mr Udeze while putting it to voice vote for the Passage of the Bill, thanked the Health Committee and the law makers for taking great interest and time in ensuring that such bill becomes law for the overall interest of the people.
