By Sadiq Aminu                                                       The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC says it has received letters of intent from One Hundred and Ten Associations that wish to register as political parties.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu who stated this at the second regular consultative meeting with the Media in Abuja said the commission was diligently processing the requests in line with the procedure outlined in the law.

According to the INEC chairman, the commission will release the full list of the 110 associations seeking registration indicating their proposed names, acronyms and the name of their protem chairmen and secretaries.

He assured Nigerians that under the current situation, the commission will continue to be guided by laws and act with fairness to all Associations seeking registration as political parties.

On the forthcoming Area Council Election, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu said the commission was fully prepared to conduct elections in the Six area councils for sixty-two councillorship seats and Six Chairmanship positions.

He however, identified some challenges to include security and low voter turnout to cast their votes on the election day.

The INEC Boss therefore appealed to the media to assist the commission on voter education to strengthen electoral process in the FCT.

In a remark, President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya commended INEC for carrying the Media along in the nation’s Democratic process.

Comrade Alhassan pledged the Union’s full support to the commission in conducting credible and fair elections.
