By Sadiq Aminu                                                     Amid growing speculations and media reports surrounding public donations for victims of the recent fire disaster at the Farm Centre GSM Market, the Kano State Government has issued a formal clarification to dispel misinformation.

In a statement made available to Africa 247 and signed by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya
The government emphasized that it has not at any time barred individuals or organizations from making donations to affected traders.

“The state government deeply values the solidarity, empathy, and generosity demonstrated by well-meaning Nigerians, especially philanthropists and corporate organizations, in the wake of the tragedy,” the statement read.

To ensure proper coordination and transparency, Comrade Waiya explained that, the government has established a High-Powered Committee and opened a dedicated bank account for donations.

He stressed that this effort is aimed at preventing duplication, mismanagement, or misdirection of relief materials and financial assistance.

“This initiative is not to discourage public support,” Waiya explained, “but to ensure that every kobo or material aid reaches genuine victims traders who lost their shops, goods, and livelihoods.”

The commissioner maintained that, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved a N2 billion intervention package for the reconstruction, expansion, and modernization of the Farm Centre GSM Market.

“Rebuilding destroyed shops and plazas, Expanding the market by acquiring additional space, Establishing an on-site fire station as well as Installing solar-powered streetlights to boost security and business activity at night.

The Commissioner also disclosed that a dedicated market management structure will be introduced to enhance transparency, orderliness, and long-term sustainability.

Waiya reaffirmed the state governments unwavering commitment to supporting the fire victims and welcomed all well-intentioned contributions.

He however urged that such donations be channeled through official platforms to prevent chaos, politicization, or exploitation of the situation.
