OYETOLA INAUGURATES GOVERNING BOARD OF THE NIGERIAN PORTS AUTHORITY                                                                                                               02-07-25

By Sadiq Aminu.                                                         The Minister of Marine and blue economy Mr Adeboyega Oyetola has inaugurated the governing board of the Nigerian Ports Authority NPA.

In his speech after the inauguration, the Minister described the event as a step in the collective efforts to strengthen the governance structures of Nigeria’s maritime institutions and position the sector for greater national impact.

Mr Oyetola explained that the Board is to provide policy direction and supervision in line with government directives but must not interfere with routine management or operational execution.

“Under Section 2 of the NPA Act, the Governing Board is vested with key policy responsibilities, particularly in the areas of staff matters (Section 10(3)(b)) and the formulation and approval of budgetary estimates (Section 20).

“These responsibilities are executed primarily through the Board’s two strategic committees — the Staff and Establishment Committee and the Finance Committee — each playing a vital role in ensuring that the Authority functions efficiently and in alignment with national goals.

The Minister however stated that the day-to-day operations and execution of policy decisions remain solely the responsibility of the Managing Director and the Management Team of the NPA.

Oyetola urged the Management of the NPA to engage constructively with the Board in a manner that reflects professionalism, mutual respect, and shared responsibility.

The permanent secretary in the ministry Mr Olufemi Oloruntola, advised the new board that the NPA, under its charge, must attain greater heights and contribute meaningfully to the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s maritime sector and the economy at large.

Chairman of the NPA Governing Board, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye, expressed their appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the confidence reposed on them and assured to do their best.
