DELTA GOVT, ASAGBA, NDLEA JOIN FORCES TO FIGHT DRUG ABUSE………..

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Delta State Government, in partnership with the Asagba of Asaba, NDLEA, and other key stakeholders, is intensifying efforts to combat drug abuse through community sensitization campaigns.

Dr. Latimore Oghenesivbe, Director-General of the State Orientation and Communications Bureau, pledged full support for the Asaba Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation Committee set up by the Asagba of Asaba, Obi Epiphany Azinge (SAN).

He stressed the importance of awareness, collaboration, and support services, citing the economic and social impact of drug abuse, especially among youths. He noted that over 500,000 people in Delta aged 15–65 were involved in illicit drug use as of 2023.

Dr. Oghenesivbe praised the state government’s “Drug Free Delta” campaign and announced its next phase, targeting 58 secondary schools and all tertiary institutions in the state.

Committee Chairperson Obi Nwanyi Ajufoh said their mission is to save lives and educate rural communities on the dangers of drug use. She emphasized the Asagba’s zero-tolerance stance on drug abuse and urged more support for local youth.

NDLEA’s Deputy Commander, Mr. Victor Isibor, revealed that over 1,000kg of drugs were seized and nearly 600 arrests made in the first half of 2025. He highlighted the agency’s rehabilitation efforts, saying users should be seen as patients, not criminals.

The Delta Police Command and National Orientation Agency also stressed the need for stronger collaboration and proactive measures to address the growing drug problem.
