Panic and confusion filled the air Tuesday morning after a Kaduna-bound train derailed shortly after leaving Abuja. The incident happened around 11 a.m. near the Kubwa–Asham axis, leaving several coaches off the tracks and hundreds of passengers stranded.
Survivors described the moment as terrifying, with some coaches toppling and others tilting sharply. “Everyone just started shouting and rushing to get out,” one passenger recounted as emergency crews worked to guide people to safety.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation confirmed the derailment and said teams of medics, security operatives, and evacuation buses were quickly deployed to the site to move commuters back to Abuja. Authorities assured that investigations are underway to determine the cause.
No deaths had been officially reported at the time of filing, though many passengers were shaken and some sustained injuries during the scramble to evacuate.
The Abuja–Kaduna rail line, a vital link for thousands of travelers, has faced safety concerns in recent years. Tuesday’s incident has once again sparked public worry about the reliability of the route.
