SUBSIDISED DIALYSIS BRINGS RELIEF AT AKTH

Kidney patients at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) are breathing a sigh of relief as the Federal Government slashes dialysis costs from as high as ₦60,000 to just ₦12,000 per session.
The subsidy, part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope health reforms, has boosted patient turnout, with AKTH now handling 22–25 patients daily.
Patients like Salihu Dukawuya, Auwal Abdullahi, and Halima Abubakar say the intervention is life-saving, though they hope dialysis will one day be free.
AKTH CMD, Prof. Abdurrahman Abba Sheshe, confirmed that the hospital has consumables for 1,000 sessions under the scheme. He also highlighted the new National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance Scheme (NEMSAS), which provides free transport and 48-hour emergency care for pregnant women, children, and accident victims.
He urged more support from the Health Ministry and philanthropists to sustain the programme.
