BUK CELEBRATES LITERACY DAY, HONOURS PROF. FATIMA

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

Bayero University Kano (BUK) marked the 2025 International Literacy Day with the induction of Professor Fatima Muhammad Umar into its Hall of Fame.

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Musa, described literacy as a tool for empowerment that goes beyond reading and writing, opening doors of opportunity for individuals and communities. He praised the Department of Continuing Education for setting up adult literacy classes for staff and nearby residents, and pledged more support for women, youth, and marginalized groups through lifelong learning.

Tributes poured in for Prof. Fatima, who retires in September 2025 after years of promoting literacy and second-chance education. She called the day historic and promised to remain an ambassador for learning.

The event featured cultural displays, speeches, and her official induction into the Hall of Fame.
