REPS MOVE TO REVIEW POLICY STOPPING UNDERAGE STUDENTS FROM WRITING EXAMS

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The House of Representatives is considering reviewing the government policy that prevents underage students from sitting for certain examinations in Nigeria.

Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Examination Bodies, Oboku Oforji, disclosed this during an oversight visit in Abuja to monitor the ongoing assessment of exceptional underage candidates who excelled in the UTME.

Oforji clarified that the age restriction was introduced by the Federal Ministry of Education, not JAMB, and assured that lawmakers will review it as part of ongoing educational reforms.

He commended the 176 underage candidates taking part in the exams for their outstanding performance, describing them as proof that Nigeria’s education system is improving.

The Committee also pledged continued support for JAMB and other examination bodies to strengthen standards and promote merit-based learning across the country.
