SENATE APPROVES TINUBU’S REQUEST TO DEPLOY TROOPS TO BENIN

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request for the immediate deployment of Nigerian troops to Benin Republic following a failed coup attempt and rising political tension there.

Tinubu’s request, read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, noted that Benin Republic asked Nigeria for urgent air support, citing the need for quick external intervention. The President also referenced ECOWAS principles and the strong ties between both nations.

Senators endorsed the request through a voice vote and praised Tinubu for acting swiftly to help restore stability. Some lawmakers also called for broader regional efforts to curb recurring coups in West Africa.
