NIGERIA, NIGER STRENGTHEN BORDER TIES AND SECURITY

Nigeria and Niger have agreed on renewed efforts to secure their shared border, improve cooperation, and boost socio-economic development in border communities. The resolution came after a three-day meeting in Zinder under the Nigeria/Niger Joint Commission (NNJC), bringing together senior officials, technical experts, and field operatives.
The talks focused on re-demarcating boundaries, enhancing security coordination, and fostering cross-border engagement in line with African Union protocols. Experts reviewed existing corridors and proposed initiatives to revive cultural and economic ties, improve infrastructure, and strengthen collaboration between local governments.
Mr. Adamu Adaji, Director-General of Nigeria’s National Boundary Commission, highlighted that the agreements would reinforce peace, stability, and development across borderlands. Niger’s delegation also called for increased funding to accelerate remaining boundary tasks. Plans for a 2026 Cross-Border Security Meeting were announced to tackle emerging threats, alongside initiatives for workshops, joint cultural events, and improved border security.
