WEST AFRICAN TROOPS BACK BENIN AFTER FAILED COUP

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

West African troops have been deployed to Benin to support the government following a failed coup attempt, with soldiers mainly from Nigeria and Ivory Coast assisting security operations.

The coup was foiled after swift military action forced mutineers out of key locations, including a military base and the state television headquarters, with support from the regional bloc ECOWAS.

Authorities say security operations are ongoing as a manhunt continues for those linked to the plot, including the alleged leader who reportedly fled to neighbouring Togo. Investigations have been launched, arrests made, and international warrants issued as the government moves to track down all those involved.

The incident adds to growing security concerns in West Africa, a region that has seen several coup attempts in recent years.
