TINUBU SEEKS ₦9TRN INCREASE TO 2026 BUDGET

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

Bola Tinubu has formally requested the National Assembly to approve a ₦9 trillion increase to the 2026 federal budget, raising the total from ₦58.4 trillion to ₦67.4 trillion.

The request was presented during Senate proceedings by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Tinubu said the adjustment aims to strengthen fiscal transparency, regularize outstanding legal obligations from previous budgets, and fund strategic national projects without destabilizing the economy.

The 2026 budget, initially presented in December 2025 with ₦58.18 trillion in total expenditure, prioritizes security, infrastructure, and economic growth, with projected revenue of ₦34.33 trillion and a deficit of ₦23.85 trillion. Tinubu emphasized that the proposed increase is consistent with his administration’s commitment to fiscal prudence, debt transparency, and value-for-money spending.
