NUPENG FLAGS RISING JOB LOSSES, RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN OIL SECTOR

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers has raised concerns over increasing job losses and alleged suppression of workers’ rights in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Speaking at the union’s delegates conference in Lagos, outgoing President Williams Akporeha said recent developments in the sector, including the removal of fuel subsidy, have worsened conditions for workers, particularly those in the informal segment.

He noted that while reforms in the industry are necessary, they must be implemented in a way that protects workers and ensures fair treatment, calling for retraining and support measures to cushion the impact.

Akporeha also expressed concern over the exclusion of labour unions from key policy decisions, warning that such actions could increase tension within the sector. He further alleged growing anti-union practices and highlighted security challenges, including attacks on petroleum transporters and poor road infrastructure affecting distribution.

He urged government and industry stakeholders to prioritise job security and uphold workers’ rights as changes continue in the sector.
