NEMA LEADS RESCUE OPERATION AFTER ENUGU BUILDING COLLAPSE

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is coordinating rescue operations after a four-storey uncompleted building collapsed at Independence Layout in Enugu State.
The incident occurred around 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026. Following the collapse, NEMA Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, directed the agency’s Enugu Operations Office to immediately deploy an emergency rescue team to the scene.
Rescuers were informed that people might be trapped beneath the rubble and began searching the debris with the support of an excavator.
As of 11:20 a.m., the joint rescue team had recovered the body of one male victim from the collapsed building.
Rescue efforts are still ongoing as emergency responders continue to search the site for possible survivors and other victims.
The operation involves NEMA, the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Police Force, Enugu State Fire and Rescue Service, Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority and the state Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
