AVIATION UNIONS THREATEN STRIKE ACTION
15-08-24

Unions in the aviation industry have issued a stern warning to the government, threatening industrial action if the 50% deduction imposed on aviation agencies is not reversed by the end of this month.

In a strongly worded letter released today and addressed to the minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Mr Festus Keyamo, the unions, National Union of Air Transport Employees NUATE, Air Transport Services Senior staff Association of Nigeria, ATSSSAN, National Association of Aircraft Pilots, Engineers, NAAPE, Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, ANAP and Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Service Employees, AUPCTRE expressed grave concern over the impact of the deduction on their ability to deliver critical safety and security services.

The letter signed by the secretaries General of the unions claim that the 50% cut has crippled the agencies, making it impossible to conduct essential trainings, maintain critical equipment, and implement the Minimum Wage Act.

They warned that this situation poses a serious threat to aviation safety and security.

Despite numerous appeals to the Presidency, the unions assert that their pleas have been ignored.

They have now resolved to mobilize workers for a strike if their demands are not met by the end of this month.

The unions emphasized that they will not allow workers to be blamed for the inevitable collapse of the agencies if the government fails to act.

The impending strike threatens to paralyze the aviation sector, with potentially catastrophic consequences for both domestic and international travel.
