NATIONAL SENIOR SECONDARY EDUCATION COMMISSION, NSSEC DEVELOPS STRATEGIC PLAN TO REPOSITION SCHOOLS 23-10-24
By Sadiq Aminu The National Senior Secondary Education Commission, NSSEC,says it has developed a strategic plan that will fully reposition secondary education in the country.
The Executive Secretary of the commission, Dr Iyela Ajayi made this known during the launch of Quality Assurance Monitoring and Evaluation of Secondary schools nationwide held at Fiwasaye Girls Grammar School Akure.
The National Senior Secondary Education Commission, NSSEC was established in 2021 as the sole regulatory and interventionist agency for secondary education in Nigeria with about twenty-one mandates which included prescription and enforcement of minimum standards, provision of infrastructure for schools as well as training and retraining of teachers.
Dr Ajayi said NSSEC hoped to consolidate on the achievements of the strategic plan by 2027, describing the effort as an initiative meant to achieve academic excellence under the President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
While speaking on the essence of the Quality Assurance Monitoring and Evaluation of Secondary schools, Dr Ajayi, explained that the programme would run in all secondary schools nationwide to promote best teaching practices.
Dr Ajayi enjoined teachers across the country to embrace the programme as an opportunity to elevate teaching practices while students should actively participate in the process to achieve excellence in their academic pursuit as education was the cornerstone of a prosperous and equitable society.
The director, Quality Assurance, NSSEC, Mrs Rabiu Umaru-Mohammed hinted that the commission would be selecting schools from four zones of the country namely South-south, Southwest, Northeast and Northwest four schools for Quality Assurance Evaluation and Monitoring this year.
The Permanent secretary, Ondo state ministry of education, Mrs Folasade Adegoke said the State had keyed into the federal government’s decision as the bill domesticating the establishment of the NSSEC had reached advanced stage of passage into law.
The Principal of Fiwasaye Girls Grammar School, the host school, Mrs Temitope Ojoge and a representative of the Principal, Federal government girls college, a deputy director, Mr iIelaboye Babalola expressed optimism that the quality assurance evaluation and monitoring of schools by the NSSEC would in no small measure enhance the teaching and learning process in Senior Secondary schools.
