POWER STATE: ISLAMIC DEVELOPMENT BANK TO INVEST $163M IN SOLAR ENERGY

By: Safiya Abdulrahim Dabban

Niger State, the “Power State,” is set to benefit from a $163 million solar electricity project by the Islamic Development Bank. The initiative, expected to generate 100 megawatts, aims to boost energy supply, support industrial growth, and empower small businesses across the state.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago said the project will complement the state’s four hydroelectric dams, helping to close existing power gaps and strengthen the economy. He also highlighted that Niger State has a history of successful partnerships with the bank, including the ongoing Minna–Bida dual carriageway.

To facilitate the project, the government has allocated 500 hectares of land, exceeding the bank’s initial request. The bank’s technical team is currently in Minna conducting feasibility studies to ensure smooth implementation.
