A member of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has asked President Bola Tinubu to suspend the proposed reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), saying the planned changes could undermine the scheme’s original purpose.
The Benue lawmaker said while reforms are necessary to improve the NYSC, they should not compromise its role in promoting national unity, discipline and service. He noted that the scheme has remained an important national institution, contributing to education, healthcare, elections and emergency response.
Agbese also cautioned against proposals to place the NYSC under civilian leadership, insisting that its military-style orientation has helped instill discipline, patriotism and a sense of national responsibility among corps members.
