GOVERNOR SANI PAYS OUTSTANDING DEBTS OWED KADUNA ELECTRIC COMPANY TO RESTORE POWER SUPPLY TO KAFANCHAN CAMPUS OF KASU 03-11-23
By Sadiq Aminu Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna has directed the immediate payment of all outstanding debts accrued from 2022 to the Kaduna Electric Company to enable the restoration of power supply to the Kafanchan and Kaduna Campuses of the Kaduna State University.
In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mohammed Lawal Shehu says on receipt of reports on the lingering power outage in both campuses, Governor Sani immediately directed the Commissioner of Education, Professor Muhammad Sani Bello to investigate the cause of the the blackout in the Kafanchan and Kaduna campuses of the University.
According to the Statement, following the findings and recommendations of the Commissioner of Education, the Governor directed that all outstanding debts from 2022 be paid to ensure that power supply is restored to both campuses.
It could be recalled that, students of Kaduna State University KASU and Kafanchan campus, had protested the over-five-month power blackout in their schools.
The protesting students carrying placards with various inscriptions like, ‘Bring back light to KASU, No light, no exams, Light up Kafanchan Campus and restore our light’, threatened to boycott the second semester examinations if the power supply was not restored.
Speaking during the protest, Vice President 1 of Kaduna State Student’s Union KADSSU, KASU chapter, Eli Sajo, lamented that the students’ preparations for their forthcoming examination were being hampered due to the prolonged power outage.
“The Kafanchan campus’s power supply was disconnected for over five months due to the inability of the University to settle the electricity bills.”
The statement notes that education is one of the major priorities of Governor Uba Sani’s administration, and the Governor has given assurances that interventions and initiatives will continue to be implemented to ameliorate the challenges faced by students in all state-owned tertiary institutions.
