NAFDAC BANS ALCOHOLIC DRINKS IN SACHET, PET BOTTLES CITES RISKS TO CHILDREN’S HEALTH, BEHAVIOUR                                                                   05-02-24

By Sadiq Aminu                                                       The National Agency for Food and drug Administration and control, NAFDAC says it’s has Begins Enforcement Of Ban On Alcoholic Drinks In Sachets and glass bottles of 200ml and below across the country.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, made this known while briefing Africa 247 correspondent in Abuja.

According to her the move was based on the recommendation of a high-powered committee of the Federal Ministry of Health and NAFDAC, the Federal Competetion and Consumer Protection Commission, and other stakeholders who took the decision in December 2018.

Professor Adeyeye who warned the manufacturers to stop the production and importation of alcoholic beverages in small parks as stringent regulatory measures will be taken against them explained that most people were at risk of the negative effects of consumption of the banned pack sizes of alcoholic beverages particularly the under-aged, commercial vehicle drivers and riders.

Professor Adeyeye further re-affirmed NAFDACs commitment to implementation of stringent regulations against alcohol abuse nationwide.

“This situation is of course not acceptable, and the Agency views this as flagrant disobedience to the laws of Nigeria. NAFDAC views this matter seriously and will engage all statutory means, which may include prosecution, to deal with the matter. ”

The NAFDAC DG also said the agency was resolutely committed to the strict implementation of the regulations and regulatory measures towards safeguarding the health of Nigerians, particularly the vulnerable youth, against the dangers of reckless consumption of alcohol.
